How does the e-Visa (ETA) work for traveling to India?
UNDERSTANDING THE INDIAN EVISA (ETA) PROCESS
The e-Visa, or ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), allows foreign nationals from eligible countries to apply online for entry to India for tourism, business, medical, or conference purposes.
Once approved, you will receive an electronic travel document via email. Present this to Indian immigration officers upon arrival.

Where Can You Enter India with an eVisa?
Travelers with a valid eVisa must enter India through one of the designated airports or seaports.
Authorized Airports Include:
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Goa, Ahmedabad, and more
Authorized Seaports Include:
Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Mumbai, Chennai
Exit Points:
Travelers can depart from India through any recognized international airport, land Integrated Check Posts (ICPs), seaports, or rail ICPs.

Categories of e-visa and duration
eVisa Types, Eligibility and Validity
1. Tourist eVisa (e-Tourist Visa)
Permitted Purposes
- Sightseeing and recreation
- Visiting friends or relatives
- Attending short-term yoga programs
- Attending short-term courses (duration less than 6 months, not leading to a formal degree or diploma)
- Participating in voluntary work (duration less than 1 month, unpaid)
2. Business eVisa (e-Business Visa)
Permitted Purposes
- Setting up business or industrial ventures
- Attending business or technical meetings
- Recruiting manpower
- Participating in trade fairs, exhibitions, or business events
- Visiting sites for project execution
- Engaging in trade, sales, or purchase activities
- Collaborating in academic business initiatives
- Providing technical expertise in ongoing projects
3. Medical eVisa (e-Medical Visa)
Permitted Purpose
- Short-term medical treatment for the applicant in a recognized Indian hospital or treatment center
4. Medical Attendant eVisa (e-Medical Attendant Visa)
Permitted Purpose
- Accompanying and assisting a patient traveling on an e-Medical Visa
(Maximum of two attendants allowed per patient)
5. Conference eVisa (e-Conference Visa)
Permitted Purpose
- Attending conferences organized by ministries of the Government of India, state governments, public sector undertakings (PSUs), or private Indian organizations
Eligibility Criteria
The purpose of visit must fall within the categories listed above: Tourist, Business, Medical, Medical Attendant, or Conference.
The applicant must hold a passport with at least six months of validity from the date of arrival in India.
The passport must have at least two blank pages for immigration stamping at the airport.
Travelers must carry a return or onward journey ticket, and should not bring more than USD 5,000 in cash in cash upon arrival.
Pakistani nationals or holders of Pakistani passports are not eligible for an eVisa and must apply for a regular visa through an Indian mission.
eVisa is not available to:
- Holders of Diplomatic or Official passports
- Travelers with Laissez-passer or other international travel documents
- Individuals endorsed on a parent’s or spouse’s passport (each applicant must hold their own passport)

INFORMATION REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR AN E-VISA
- A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from the date of arrival
- A recent passport-style photograph (as per specifications)
- A scanned copy of the passport’s bio page
- Travel details including flight and accommodation information
- A valid method of payment (credit/debit card)
- A working email address for communication and eVisa delivery
- No ongoing criminal case or previous visa violation in India
